Earlier this month, Blue announced the Blue Pro Drum Kit…Kit, your one-stop solution for getting the legendary 3-mic technique recording. But why is this the best way to get the best sound? Blue’s Microphones’ founder Skipper Wise explains -

“The unique sonic signature of the Dragonfly was created by boosting the upper bass frequencies at 100-150hz to help thicken up thin signal sources. This character coupled with a slightly depressed mid range at 400hz and an extended top end at 12-15kHz, helps cymbals to be recorded with a live and present rich timbre. The rotating grill which house the Blue hand tuned large diaphragm condenser capsule can be positioned for the optimum placement with ease.

Filling in the deeper bass frequencies, the Mouse microphone takes on the chore of handling loud signal sources (SPL) such as the kick drum. Known for its durability in the recording environment, the Mouse is as versatile as it looks with its shockmounted rotating head.

These three microphones complete the sonic spectrum needed in producing a full-bodied, live recording session for the most discerning drummer and engineer.”

Our mics are created for and by musicians and artists, but don’t just take our word on how good they are – Award winning songwriter and musician, Michael Elsner, recently tried out the Mikey, portable iPod/iPhone mic, and had this to say –

“The Blue Mikey is an incredible sounding mic and an instant hit at my various writing sessions. It’s 3 recording levels allow me to record everything from full band writing sessions to intimate acoustic/vocal sessions with amazing clarity and sonic quality.”

Maybe we can get Michael back on the blog to discuss the specific ways he uses the Mikey and his secret tips.

Michael has worked with top groups including Sixpence None the Richer, The Backstreet Boys, along with various television, album and film projects including the Ella Enchanted soundtrack, The Young & The Restless, The Bold & the Beautiful and most recently CBS Television’s ‘The Ex List.’

Singer, songwriter and pianist, Sarah LaMantia, is getting ready to release her first full-length solo album, but in the meantime she has become a YouTube sensation using the Snowball USB microphone.

She let us know how she gets the best sound from her Blue microphone, Snowball:

1. Which mic do you use and why did you choose it?

I’m currently using the Blue Snowball, although I JUST received my Yeti two days ago. Can’t wait to test it out.

I started using the Snowball on recommendation from my local Apple Store (South Hills Village, PA). I’d gotten fabulous advice from them in the past and everyone at the store is super supportive of my YouTube channel, so they were anxious to help me make them sound the best they possibly could. Their favorite mic was the Snowball and I took their word for it. So glad I did. I instantly started receiving comments from YouTube viewers asking how my sound quality was so clear.

2. In what ways are you using the mic to get the best sound for your purpose?

I play the piano in all of my videos, so I use the tripod and stand the mic right on top of my piano. I like to place mine a bit off center and about a foot away from me. I tend to have some power in my higher notes, so I put it far enough away that I’m not causing it to peak when I belt, but it still very clearly captures all the soft, low tones and falsetto notes, too.

3. What is your best advice to others using this mic?

Play around with it! When I opened the box I had no idea what I was doing. I have no formal audio recording training, but I do have a good ear. Just play with it until you get the result that sounds best to you. There’s really no right or wrong. I record with GarageBand on my MBPro, so I play a bit with the compression settings, reverb and, my fave, the EQ settings. I like a lot of vocal presence in my recordings and the Snowball gives me the result I’m looking for. The best part it, it’s so easy to set up. Literally, plug it into the USB and Go!

4. What programs do you use to record, edit, upload, etc your recordings

I use GarageBand, but I’m tempted to switch to Logic so I can do some multi-track editing. Like I said, I play the piano, but my piano is not miked or hooked up to my computer in any way; I’d like to be able to figure that out someday soon. It’s a digital piano with MIDI in and output, but, again, I’m no recording pro…. haven’t quite figured it out yet. I will, though.

Check out the video below of Taio Cruz’s Break Your Heart recorded with the Snowball:

Sarah’s YouTube Channel: http://www.YouTube.com/SarEliz0131

The most recent videos (from July 2009 forward) are recorded with my Blue Snowball. Compare with older videos to see how much of a difference it’s made; it’s incredible!
